An Insider’s Guide to Milford Sound Activities
Our recommendations for making the most of your time in Milford Sound
There is much more to Fiordland than Milford Sound. But no visit to Fiordland is complete without visiting one of New Zealand’s most stunning destinations. To make planning your visit a little easier we’ve put together a list of Milford Sound activities we recommend.
Really Important Advice
Planning to visit Milford Sound? If at all possible, plan to stay in Te Anau or Milford itself. Many people choose day trip options from Queenstown but these make for a very long day and mean you miss out on soooooo much.
Recommended Milford Sound Day Trip
Sometime — we understand — there is only so much time available. Trips & Tramps offer a number of day trip options from Te Anau. Traveling by minivan these small group tours include cruises and guided walks options, and offer an unguided option to hike part of the Routeburn Track (one of New Zealand’s famed ‘Great Walks’) from the road.
Recommended Milford Sound Experience
There is a lot to see in Milford. With multiple sites to see and day hike opportunities, the road trip in alone is worth a day. And that’s one of the reasons we encourage to overnight at Milford Sound lodge and give yourself a chance to really take in all that Milford Sound has to offer. Staying in Milford means you get to see it without the day-tripping crowds and do walking and kayaking trips that you’ll struggle to fit into even the longest summer day.
Scenic Flights With Southern Lakes Helicopters
Really short of time? Southern Lakes Helicopters has been taking people to remote places in Fiordland for 25 years. Led by local aviation legend, Richard ‘Hannibal’ Hayes, the Southern Lakes team know just about everything to know about getting a great view of Fiordland from the air. They offer a number of ‘flight-seeing’ options including a 90 minute trip over the Divide into Milford taking in many of the sights along the Milford Road and the beautiful country Milford Track walkers exeprience. With trips that include other Fiordland attractions, including Doubtful & Dusky Sounds, available, Southern Lakes are the people to take you to remote places in Fiordland with maximum safety and minimum fuss.
